Record Pools

A Record Pool is an organization of DJ’s who pay a monthly fee in order to obtain the newest music first. Labels send their music to these record pools for free, and in return the DJ’s are required to play their music and provide the label with feedback on their release. The benefit of a record label submitting their music to these pools is that they have the opportunity to “break” a new artist. Record Pools usually receive this music before radio, so the idea is to expose a single and start building up some hype for the song.

Before a label puts a lot of attention into pushing a new single, they will need to feel comfortable that the song is a hit. Record pools can be an effective way to gauge the potential of a song. If a DJ (or DJ’s) like the song enough to put it in their regular rotation, then you’re probably on to something (and visa versa). DJ’s have the ability to break music in the clubs, mix tapes, and even on radio shows. Most pools have charts for different categories, and they may even place your music in these charts. Another great thing about record pools is that they accept independent releases as well as major releases, so you can see how your music will compete with other records that are out there.
