Hip Hop Fashion

When you think about Hip Hop, you probably think about beats and rhymes. Maybe you think about turntables, records and microphones, and maybe you even think about break dancing. But, if that is all that comes to mind when thinking about hip hop, then you are missing one of the most important parts of the hip hop culture; Fashion!

“My Adidas”

Fashion has played a major role in Hip Hop since its birth in the 1970’s. Back then you would see fans and artists rocking things like Kangol Bucket Hats, name brand tracksuits and shell toe Adidas (which were popularized by Hip Hop Legends Run DMC). Men would wear big gold chains and women would wear big door knocker earrings. Every major artist had their own style and the way they dressed became just as important as the way that they rapped. I even saw a story about Hip Hop on the news one time where they interviewed people about rap music and they asked a girl why she liked Run DMC. She said that she liked them because they look cool. That shows you how important and influential your appearance can be.

Many different styles have came and went throughout the years. While a jheri curl might have been cool back in 1982, you wouldn’t be caught dead with one right now. I bet Kid from Kid N Play wouldn’t sport a hi-top fade now either. But fashion can really define an era. When N.W.A. came out with Black Oakland Raiders Hats, Dickies pants, plaid shirts and Chuck Taylor Sneakers, that was considered the “Gangsta Style” at the time. FUBU, Ecko and DKNY became popular brands in the 90’s along with Tommy Hilfigger. One time Snoop Dogg appeared on Saturday Night Live with a Tommy Hilfigger sweatshirt and they sold out in New York City stores the next day.

That right there shows you how influential and powerful fashion is. Fashion is just as important to a career as having the right beats and rhymes. Not everybody that is a fan of Hip Hop can rap or make beats, but everybody can wear clothes. Fashion is a great form of self expression, and in this music business image is everything. Whether you’re a fan or an artist you can really celebrate your uniqueness and represent yourself with fashion.

Fashion is kind of like music in the sense that there are name brands of clothing that you can find almost anywhere (mainstream) and there are more exclusive sought after brands (underground) that only a select group of people are interested in. Mainstream brands would be brands like Sean John, Southpole and Timberland. Brands like Lemar and Dauley, 10 deep, and Rock Smith are considered Street Wear. Street Wear is street culture reflected in fashion. This style of fashion incorporates retro 80’s elements, sneaker culture and hipster style.

“Do You”

Like music, fashion is an ever changing industry and what is in today could be out tomorrow. That is why you must keep your eyes open and also don’t be afraid to be different. When you make music you don’t want to sound like everybody else, and you should carry the same philosophy for the way you dress. Make sure that however you dress it represents you and it’s not the same exact thing that everybody else is doing. If you want to be taken seriously then you must look the part but also be an individual. So whatever you do just make sure that you understand hip hop and fashion go hand in hand.
